Get ready for a heartwarming treat at Borough Market as London’s secondary school pupils serve up their culinary creations at the Young Marketeers Winter Soup Sale on Tuesday, 4 February. This cherished annual event sees young cooks aged 11-16 whipping up hearty soups and baking fresh bread, all for a great cause. With proceeds going to the food redistribution charity Plan Zheroes, this is your chance to enjoy something delicious while making a difference.

Homemade Soup, Made with Love

Classic chunky vegetable or a comforting leek and potato? The young chefs have it all covered. Students from four London schools will showcase soups made from scratch, using seasonal produce they’ve grown themselves. To top it off, every bowl of soup comes with freshly baked bread from the Market’s renowned bakery, Bread Ahead.

Each dish is rigorously taste-tested by food experts, ensuring shoppers experience the high standards Borough Market is known for. This isn’t just soup; it’s a labor of love that highlights seasonal ingredients and celebrates sustainability.

More Than Cooking: A Hands-On Food Education

The Young Marketeers programme, a partnership between Borough Market and School Food Matters, goes beyond the kitchen. It teaches students to grow their own fruit and vegetables, develop cooking skills, and understand seasonal eating. Pupils also get a crash course in business skills, learning from Borough Market’s seasoned traders on how to attract customers, sell goods, and turn a profit.

For students, it’s not just about soup. It’s a practical lesson in sustainability, entrepreneurship, and teamwork.

A Decade of Delicious Impact

Since its inception, the Young Marketeers programme has engaged over 250 schools, empowering students to grow, cook, and sell their own food. From fruit and veg to seasonal soups, their efforts have raised over £14,500 for charity.

Jane Swift, CEO of Borough Market, highlights the pride young participants feel when selling their creations: “It’s so rewarding to see pupils take ownership of their work, from growing produce to selling soup, all while supporting a good cause.”

Stephanie Slater, Founder of School Food Matters, adds: “This programme gives students hands-on opportunities to cook, bake, and explore food while building crucial skills. Quality food education deserves the same attention as core subjects like maths and English.”

The Young Marketeers Winter Soup Sale is more than just a fun event; it’s a testament to the power of food to educate, unite, and give back. Whether you’re a soup enthusiast, a sustainability advocate, or simply someone who loves a great community event, this is a must-attend.

Come for the soup, stay for the impact. And maybe leave with a newfound appreciation for the next generation of chefs and changemakers.
