Couples in London are having sex up to four times a week to “keep warm” in winter

AS TEMPERATURES continue to drop, resilient adults in the UK and Ireland are giving “Netflix and chill” new meaning as they look for inventive ways of warming up, without turning the heating on.

A survey of 1,003 UK and Irish adults commissioned by Emo Oil, a home heating oil supplier, has revealed that many of us are using the drop in temperature as an excuse to have more sex, with the average person doing the deed as many as four times per week in winter.

The research found the favourite alternative method of warming up amongst people is to simply have a cup of tea, with 72% of those surveyed saying they would do this.

The research found that the average person surveyed drinks five cups of tea every day throughout the colder season, with the most hard-core tea fanatics consuming as many as 10 cuppas per day.

41% of respondents said they would wear as many as three layers of clothing before resorting to turning the heating on and more than 1 in 5 women (21%) even claim to have worn tights under their trousers to keep cosy.

Whilst almost 1 in 4 (24%) say they choose to exercise for warmth, 59% say throughout winter they simply eat more hot meals andwarm up from the inside out.

A less eco-friendly 10% of of us admit to warming their clothes with a hairdryer, whilst 7% leave the oven door open to enjoy additionalwarmth in the kitchen.

Mark Hackett, Project Manager at Emo Oil said: “Considering how much we love to complain about the weather, it’s amazing the lengths people will go to before giving in and turning the heating on.

“Whilst drinking tea and having more sex are good quick fixes for the cold, the effects of these quickly wear off and so they aren’t the most efficient way of regulating body temperature.

“Whether people are too impatient to wait for a radiator to work its magic, or simply want to save on heating bills, some of the more bizarre methods of staying warm that have been highlighted in this research aren’t that economical. For instance, turning the oven on and leaving the door open is a huge waste of both energy and money – it’s far more eco-friendly to switch the heating on for a period of time in order to warm up your home.”

The UK and Ireland’s top 10 alternative ways to warm up:

  1. Have a cup of tea (72%)
  2. Have sex (60%)
  3. Eat hot food (59%)
  4. Have a cuddle (51%)
  5. Wear more clothes (41%)
  6. Exercise (24%)
  7. Huddle around a fire (24%)
  8. Get into bed (15%)
  9. Use a hairdryer on your clothes (10%)
  10. Turn the oven on and leave the door open (7%)
