When a Michelin-starred restaurant in Mayfair decides to hit refresh, you know it’s going to be a showstopper. Benares, one of London’s most celebrated Indian dining destinations, has returned with a stunning makeover and a tantalizing new menu, signaling its next chapter in redefining contemporary Indian cuisine.

If you thought this iconic hotspot couldn’t get more exciting, think again.

A Varanasi-Inspired Transformation

Step into Benares, and you’ll immediately feel the vibrant spirit of Varanasi, its namesake. Renowned designer Dale Atkinson of Rosendale Design has masterfully reimagined the space, infusing it with the energy, textures, and hues of the holy Indian city.

The journey begins with a bold new entrance, adorned with an elegant awning and lush planters. A dramatic candle wall greets you, setting the tone for what lies upstairs. The revamped bar takes center stage with chic furniture and sophisticated vibes, making it the perfect spot for a pre-dinner cocktail—or maybe two.

The main dining room, once a muted monochrome space, now bursts with color and intricate details. Backlit Jali panels, ornate ceiling artwork, and vibrant patterns bring a spiritual energy to every corner, creating an unforgettable ambiance.

The Menu: A Culinary Masterpiece

Helming the kitchen is Executive Chef Sameer Taneja, who has curated a menu that’s as innovative as the space itself. Launching on February 10th, the new dishes promise to blend bold Indian flavors with British seasonal ingredients in ways you’ve never imagined.

Expect to dive into creations like Dum Ka Truffle Shorba, a luxurious winter truffle and rabbit stew that’s comfort in a bowl. For a burst of flavor, the Vindaloo with oysters and Goan sausage, served with a steamed coconut and rice bun, delivers a fiery punch. Dessert lovers will swoon over the Rasmalai infused with rose, cardamom, and vanilla—an indulgent finale to your dining journey.

And let’s not forget the classics. Beloved staples like Kukkad Makhani and Meat Korma are making a triumphant return, proving that sometimes tradition still reigns supreme.

Crafting a Sophisticated Experience

“The refurbishment embodies our ambition to craft a space that mirrors the vibrancy and creativity of our cuisine,” says Chef Sameer Taneja. “The new menu celebrates the finest British ingredients, enriched with bold flavors and techniques.”

Benares has always been more than just a restaurant. It’s an experience that combines artistry, innovation, and hospitality. Director Bruno Nath Lopez adds, “Our goal was to create a design that reflects the essence of Benares—sophisticated, vibrant, and welcoming.”

Plan Your Visit

Benares reopened its stunning doors on January 21st, with the much-anticipated menu launching on February 12th. The tasting menu starts at £135, while à la carte and set lunch options ensure there’s something for every diner.
