The annual World AIDS Day Red Run returned to Victoria Park on 1 December 2018 – the 30th anniversary of the 1st World AIDS Day. London Mayor Sadiq Khan attended to support this year’s event and cut the official race day ribbon after which thousands took part in the 5k/10k run in support of HIV services.
Now in its 9th year, the event has charities from across the country taking part and is set to beat all previous records in terms of runners and money raised for HIV causes. This year’s event saw nearly 2,000 people attend, raising over £103,000 for HIV support services. The Red Run is the only event of its kind in the UK uniting the HIV sector, creating a platform for HIV organisations across the country to raise awareness and vital funds for their work.
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “The Red Run is a fantastic event that raises awareness and funding for HIV organisations across the country. It’s vital that we support the excellent work being done to end the stigma surrounding HIV and AIDS and improve the lives of people living with HIV in our city.”
In addition to Mayor Khan cutting the start ribbon, the 2018 Red Run was hosted by iconic girl drag band DENIM and Jim Stanton from Horse Meat Disco and EAGLE London provided music for all those in attendance. There were also 4 panels of the UK AIDS Memorial Quilt on display, a pop-up AIDS Memorial and a small display of HIV and AIDS public health poster campaigns from Wellcome Collection.
