Experience London’s Iconic Light Festival Like Never Before
The dark winter nights are about to get a whole lot brighter. Battersea Power Station’s Free Light Festival returns for its fifth year, running from 23rd January to 23rd February 2025. This unmissable event will illuminate the iconic riverside neighbourhood with eight breathtaking light installations crafted by British and international artists. Whether you’re looking for a visual spectacle or an interactive art experience, this festival is a perfect escape from the winter blues.
What to Expect at Battersea Power Station’s Light Festival
This year’s festival promises to be bigger and more dazzling than ever. Partnering with Light Art Collection, James Glancy Design, and Kumquat Lab, the festival will feature four UK or London debut installations, alongside a brand-new piece created exclusively for Battersea Power Station.
Aurora: A Dazzling Exclusive for Battersea
One of the festival’s highlights, Aurora, is a bespoke light installation by James Glancy Design, housed in the Art Deco Turbine Hall A. Inspired by the ethereal beauty of the Northern Lights, this abstract light sculpture captures the wonder of the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Aurora’s interplay of light promises a magical experience for visitors.
Interactive Light Art and Soundscapes
Visitors can actively engage with many of the festival’s installations.
– In Bloom by Kumquat Lab is an interactive musical sculpture inspired by pollination. Pass your hands over luminous spheres to create harmonious melodies that blend seamlessly with others around you.
– Never Ends, by Italian artists Luigi Console and Valentina Novembre, invites visitors to ride a horse on a spring. As you swing, the surrounding lights spring to life, creating a whimsical fairy-tale setting.
Debuts and Unforgettable Installations
The festival also showcases exciting debut pieces that push the boundaries of light art:
– Spin Me a Yarn by Studio Vertigo turns the water feature in Circus West Village into a playful scene with giant illuminated balls of wool.
– Tornado by UxU Studio is a mesmerizing light tornado, combining the awe of natural disasters with imaginative fantasy.
– Spider by Groupe LAPS fills Turbine Hall B with 80 LED-lit spiders that playfully resemble acrobats.
Other standout works include Atlas by Jon Voss, a mechanical cyborg symbolizing modern infrastructure, and Parabolic Lightcloud by Amigo & Amigo, which uses over 1,000 lights to reflect human emotions like love and calmness.
Beyond the Lights: Dining and Entertainment
The Light Festival isn’t just about art—it’s a full evening out. Visitors can enjoy a variety of restaurants and bars in the vibrant Battersea Power Station neighbourhood. Warm up with mouthwatering options like Dishoom, Sticks ‘n’ Sushi, or Where the Pancakes Are. For drinks, head to Battersea Brewery, Control Room B, or Searcys Champagne Bar for a well-deserved treat.
Feeling adventurous? Indulge in Chimney Cake’s winter pop-up hut in Malaysia Square for freshly baked delights. Coffee lovers should check out the newly opened % Arabica for their signature Kyoto and Spanish Lattes.
